Postdoctoral Fellow in Virtual Presence and Interaction at McGill

Virtual Presence and Interaction - Shared Reality Lab - Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

McGill University, Montreal

Professor Jeremy Cooperstock

The Shared Reality Lab is seeking applications for a 1-year (renewable for a second year) postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at McGill University, available to start immediately.

The research involves an emphasis on image and video processing, and high-fidelity distributed communication, with applications to performing arts in the context of the "Enhanced Virtual Presence and Performance" project. As part of this work, we are also collaborating with international researchers in developing the tools and technologies to support a multi-site opera performance, integrating distributed opera singers, orchestra, and audience members. Research challenges include suitable use of signal acquisition and display technologies that support the highly dynamic environment of an artistic performance and afford the most engaging experience for both performers and audience, strategies for compensating for network latency, and evaluation of the resulting experience. A summary of some of the relevant issues can be found in Multimodal Telepresence Systems.

Application Criteria: Candidates will have completed a Ph.D. in Computer Science or Electrical and Computer Engineering, with an emphasis in Multimedia, Computer Graphics, or Human-Computer Interaction. The successful candidate must have evidence of independent and teamwork abilities, excellent organizational and communication skills, a solid publication record, very strong programming skills in C and familiarity with Linux. Additional skills in one or more of the following areas will be considered as valuable assets:

  • computational photography and video manipulation
  • particle filters and related statistical modeling techniques
  • affective computing
  • interaction design

To apply: Please send the following information to sre-jobs [at] cim [dot] mcgill [dot] ca:

  • A brief letter of application, clarifying the projects area(s) of interest and fit to the area(s)
  • A curriculum vitae which includes full contact information
  • List of publications with links to pdf-versions of the three most relevant publications

Applications will be evaluated as they are received with priority given to applications received by April 30. A short-list of prospective candidates will be contacted for interviews.
