Labs (the research arm of Alcatel-Lucent) with a mission to conduct basic and applied research in scientific fields related to computing and communications software. BL India has active research programs in wireless networks, machine learning, network & distributed systems, algorithms, data mining, security and human-computer interaction. The center has a strong record of top-tier publications, and successful technology and product transfers. 

ML research in BL India:

We are interested in research issues pertaining to the application of machine learning algorithms to social network analysis in order to explain social phenomena like influence propagation, community formation, social collaboration etc. The scope of this research direction is broad - at one end, we are keen on exploring the theoretical foundation for learning and characterizing these social phenomena. On the other hand, we are interested in building applications that can leverage these social behavior in an innovative and easily consumable way. 

Another focus of our lab is building technologies for users in emerging markets such as India. Towards this end, we are looking to build intelligent and interactive applications on mobile smart-phones. Depending on the goals, this requires the development of algorithms that can learn & process multi-modal inputs (voice, video via a camera, location, text etc.) and through interactions with the end-user, offer fast and accurate decisions within the resource constraints of a mobile device.

We’re looking for research candidates with a PhD in CS/ECE/EE from a reputed university along with an interest and background in machine learning and its application areas (such as vision, NLP, speech/image processing etc.). The following is expected from such a researcher:

• Initiate and make significant technical contributions to Bell Labs research projects 

• Design and execute highly complex or specialized projects. 

• Create intellectual property and establish thought-leadership for Alcatel-Lucent by publishing papers in prestigious forums, filing patents, building and demonstrating prototypes. 

• Impact the business units of Alcatel-Lucent through novel innovations.
