About Affectiva

Founded in 2009, Affectiva grew out of collaborative research at the MIT Media Lab. We apply innovations in affective computing to help understand how people feel in order to improve products and experiences. Affectiva’s customers include Fortune 500 companies, agencies and leading universities. Its products include the Q™, a wearable biosensor, and the Affdex facial expression recognition platform. Affectiva is privately held with backing from the National Science Foundation, WPP and venture capital. We are located in the Waverley section of Waltham, MA with easy access by public transport.

Responsibilities

Affectiva has the world’s largest database of physiological and facial expressions of emotion. This is a real-world, rich dataset albeit a challenging one. We’re looking for someone who wants to push the state-of-the-art in machine learning methods, applying those methods to large amounts of noisy, complex real-world data. The ideal candidate will advance our core emotion recognition algorithms; choosing discriminative features that represent the data and building a smart machine learning system that is capable of online learning with semi-supervised training and classification.

The responsibilities of the Research Scientist include:

• Research, develop and implement state-of-the-art machine learning solutions to the problems of emotion recognition
• Research, develop and implement meaningful features in the data that discriminate a range of emotions

Requirements

We’re looking for a motivated, entrepreneurial and talented professional to add to the Affdex team. Successful candidates for this role will have:

- A Masters/PhD degree in EE/Computer Science with specialization in

machine learning, computer vision or related areas.

- Solid background and experience in machine learning, especially dealing with any of: large amounts of data, noisy labels, semi-supervised classification or online learning;

- Excellent programming skills (e.g., MATLAB, C/C++. Python);

Assets:

- Expertise in facial / human behavior analysis, tracking and classification

- Industry experience researching and implementing machine learning models for real-world data;

- Commercial software development experience
